Finding Hope this Christmas…

Let’s face it.  It’s been a tough year.  It seems not a day goes by that we do not hear of new atrocities – violence, murder, stealing of children, persecution of the innocent, mass slaughter…

How are we to feel “merry and bright” while evil wreaks havoc throughout our world, while those who are suffering cry out in anguish, while the earth soaks up the blood of the innocent?

It seems too much to bear.

We are told in John 10:10 that there is an evil one whose purpose is “to steal and kill and destroy” (NLT).  The evidence of his reign of terror surrounds us.  It seems, at times, that we haven’t got a chance against such blatant evil.

But the truth, friends, is that a great light has been sent to obliterate evil and darkness!

“The people who walk in darkness
    will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
    a light will shine.”

Isaiah 9:2 (NLT)

Yes, God sent his one and only precious son to be hope for the hopeless.  A shining light to pierce through the darkest night.  We need only to turn to him and accept the greatest gift ever given, Jesus.

This makes me angry. Death and funerals are so closely intertwined with this thing we call life, that it seems I am forever facing the cruel reminders of my past. Sure, I could refuse to go, but people would start asking questions. Questions I am not yet ready to answer.

My husband stays close by my side, to help me feel safe and protected. We bring our daughter along as well. I have found that having a little one to take care of in those moments, helps me to stay ‘present’. Keeps the memories from overwhelming me and taking me away.
