Intimacy with God…

I am on a journey.

A healing journey, yes, but also a journey of learning to cultivate intimacy with God.

This journey captivates me.

Hearing my heavenly Father speak words of love into my life has been life-giving and freeing. There is such joy in communicating with the Father in this way – in a relationship that is truly reciprocal.

It has been several weeks now, since I attended the 3 Crosses retreat in Muskoka, for what can best be described as a prayer and ‘listening’ experience.

The weekend began with some teaching about learning to discern God’s voice. There was a time to enquire of the Lord, as to why He had brought each of us to that place, and to dedicate our time into His hands.

On Saturday morning, we were each prayed over and sent out on the three-hour, solitary prayer walk. A time to intentionally quiet the distractions, and focus solely on our heavenly Father in the midst of His beautiful creation. A time to “Be still and know that [He] is God”.   Psalm 46:10

One of the sites along the walk was a beautiful, grassy meadow adorned with emerald trees – Gethsemane. To be clear, we were not in Israel, but for the purpose of the retreat this was the place to contemplate that last Thursday Jesus spent in the olive grove with His disciples on the night He was betrayed. An opportunity to reflect on the deep anguish that Jesus suffered as He prayed…

“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine…He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood” Luke 22:42-44 (NLT)

As I meditated on the events of that night, I was struck afresh by the magnitude of the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. Jesus, who was fully human, knew the agony that lay ahead, but surrendered fully and willingly to His Father’s plan.

It broke me. Tears streamed as I thanked Him.

I sensed Him answer my words of thanks. Not in an audible voice, but in a quiet whisper to my heart of hearts…

Yes, my child. These things I did out of my great love for you. The price was extravagant, but you are worthy of the price because of WHO you are in the Father’s eyes – clothed in the righteousness of Christ, forgiven, chosen, redeemed, adopted, and loved beyond measure. His most precious child.

I have been on this journey of learning to discern the Father’s voice for a little while now. It never ceases to amaze me that what seems to be most pressing on His heart to share, are words that affirm His great love for me, and affirm my identity as His child.

When I have heard others share their journeys of ‘listening’, this seems this is true for them as well. For me, this is a wonderful confirmation that these words come from my loving, heavenly Father. I find further confirmation in His word…

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

1 John 3:1

Still sitting in the garden, I sensed Him continue to whisper…

Rest in me. My sacrifice was not just to save you from – from death, destruction, eternal separation. It was to save you for – for life, joy, love, abundance, intimate encounters with me. Times like this.

There was a peace as I heard these words. While they challenge, there is no condemnation.

These words are consistent with what I know of His character, and of the things I know to be true – that He is loving, that He has plans to prosper us and not to harm us, and that He promises us a life of abundance.

Another site on the listening experience was the upper three crosses. As I sat at the foot of the cross in that place, a phrase from the MP3 recording stood out to me. “Death that leads to new life”. As I heard this, my eye was drawn to a fresh young shoot of green, bursting forth from a dead-looking stump.

I sensed the Lord whisper these words…

You have no idea, many times, of the great work I am doing.  The things that appear stagnant, hopeless and dead to you will blossom abundantly in my perfect timing. Trust in my sovereignty, my goodness, my plan. You may not be able to see my hand at work in your life, but surely, I AM.

As I heard this, verses from Exodus 3 came to mind…

But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is His name?’ Then what should I tell them?”

God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.”

Exodus 3:13-14 (NLT)

For me, this was so reassuring. I was reminded that the God who I love is the same powerful God of the Old Testament who created the universe, parted the Red Sea, and led His people out of slavery. Of course, I knew this in my head, but there is incredible power in coming to a place where your heart begins to understand and accept these truths as well.

Our loving, heavenly Father knows and understands the struggles we each face. He cares deeply, but He is not worried in the least – He’s got this. He can see the big picture, and He is surely redeeming our brokenness for good. He is so very fond of His precious children.

May you be blessed with hearing the Father’s words of love and affirmation for you, sweet one,

Kamea

  2. I am always hesitant to comment when my beliefs differ, but I found your words both powerful and comforting. Patience and acceptance do not come easy for me, letting go and letting god, yet it’s such a relief to do exactly that sometimes and let go of control I don’t really have anyway. To trust in the greater scheme of things…

    • My dear Patricia,

I am honored to have you share your thoughts here. I trust you will always find this place a safe environment to ask questions, and share differences of opinion. I am so thankful that you found comfort and power in my words, and hopefully in the words of God’s word that I shared as well. I agree wholeheartedly that patience does not come easily. I’m not sure I like the term ‘letting go’ – those of us who have been broken through abuse will never let go of the experience, it is a part of who we are. I think the difference is learning to release the pain and bitterness, and focus on the good that has resulted. No, I would never say the abuse itself was good – it was pure evil, but because of what I endured, I am able to walk alongside others who are hurting, and offer them understanding and hope. Help them to know that they are not alone, and that they can get through this. This I do consider good, and am thankful for the people who have been there for me in this way. Thank you so much for contributing to the conversation in such a meaningful way. I hope you will feel welcome to share your thoughts often!

  3. “He is surely redeeming our brokenness for good.” Yes!
Last week for me personally was such a broken week… but we stay clinging to His provision and faithfulness… and the good follows, flowing down from the Father of Lights 🙂 Your blog always ministers to my heart, girl. One day soon maybe, I’ll get to hug you in person instead of leaving them here on the blog! Blessings, Kamea! Great post!

    • Dearest Christine,

I’m sorry that last week was such a struggle for you. I find myself in that place of brokenness this week, and it is challenging beyond words. I am so thankful for the encouragement of friends like you, who support and love me through the hard times. And yes, we will have to plan to get together soon! It may be a bit of a challenge to find a time, now that summer is here and all my little ones will be home, but certainly possible. I will probably enjoy taking a little time away for me after a couple of weeks 😉

  5. What a beautiful concept for a retreat! I too am so comforted by much of what I read of God’s words to Moses. I heard Priscilla Shirer paraphrase the interaction at the burning bush one time as this, “God said, ‘It don’t matter who you are; you go tell them who I AM, Moses!”

We are neighbors at #TellHisStory this week.

The retreat really was wonderful, and powerful as well. I love Priscilla Shirer’s paraphrase that you shared. That is so great! May we also remember that He is the great I AM, and His power is available to those who believe.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. That particular moment, when I sensed Him whispering those words to my heart, was very powerful. It helped me to remember that His ways are not my ways, and that His ways far exceed my understanding. I may have no idea of the great work He is doing, but He is working nonetheless.

    • Sweet Mary,

The prayer retreat was a very powerful experience for me. Not only hearing my heavenly Father speak words of love into my life, but also sharing with others afterward, and hearing very similar themes in their ‘listening’. Such beautiful confirmation of listening prayer.

  8. What a beautiful experience you had! Thank you for sharing. I don’t just sit in the quiet for nearly as long as I’d like. God and I talk in the morning and in snippets throughout the day since I’m a stay at home mom. I know someday I’ll have all the time in the world. Then I’ll long for the times my little ones ran hollering though the house:) blessings this week and praying for you as you deepen your relationship with our Father!

    • Welcome Meg,

Boy, can I relate to talking to God in ‘snippets’ all throughout the day, because sitting in solitude is often just not an option. That is my reality most days. I am a busy, stay-at-home mom as well, and ‘snippets’ is often all I get. But I am thankful that He is always with us, and longs to bless us in these times as well.

May God richly bless you with His words of love as you run after those precious little treasures,

  9. Kamea, I love the idea of your weekend retreat. Sounds like you had a fabulous time connecting with our God of Hope. Listening for His sound has been a passion for me for quite some time and I am thrilled that you have learned it, are learning it and walking in it. I love the reality of our Father working behind the scenes to bring into our view the good plans He has for us. Alluring us with His love and drawing us close to His heart is one of them!

  10. Dear Kamea, I’m blessed again by reading the prayerful words and insights you have shared. Such lovely conversation with our Abba Father! And as I read it felt like these words were directed to my heart:”Rest in me. My sacrifice was not just to save you from – from death, destruction, eternal separation. It was to save you for – for life, joy, love, abundance, intimate encounters with me. Times like this.” The abundant life may not look as we imagine but it is always God’s desire for us. I love the thought of experiencing more fully what we are saved for as well as saved from. Thank you! Blessings, love and hugs. Xox ❤

    • Sweet Joy,

I am so glad that you were blessed by reading these words of love from our Abba Father. I think it is beautiful that that particular part spoke directly to your heart. You are right that the abundant life is often so different than we might imagine. We would avoid suffering at all, if given the chance, but some of His greatest blessings and times of greatest intimacy with Him flow out of our dark valleys.

      Much love to you,

  11. Kamea,
Another beautiful post! I especially loved where you wrote, “Rest in me. My sacrifice was not just to save you from – from death, destruction, eternal separation. It was to save you for – for life, joy, love, abundance, intimate encounters with me. Times like this.” – Many of us look at our relationship as only a means to Heaven. But it is so much more! Freedom on this side of the cross!! Thank you for sharing your journey. (Your 3-day retreat sounds amazing, by the way!)

    • Sweet Lori,

Those words spoke powerfully to my heart. It is true that the saving work of Jesus offers us so much more than a home in Heaven. We are offered freedom, a life of abundance, joy, and so much more. And we are offered those things here and now. Not perfectly, but increasingly.

May you be richly blessed with an increasingly abundant life in Him,
